What Happens If My Grease Trap Overflows?

An overflowing grease trap can cause sewer backups into your kitchen, send FOG into the municipal sewer system (which triggers fines), create foul odors that reach your dining room, and fail a health inspection. If you notice standing grease or slow drainage, call for emergency service immediately.

The Immediate Consequences

When a grease trap overflows, grease-laden wastewater backs up through floor drains and sinks. In a working kitchen during service, that means standing water on the floor, grease on surfaces, and potentially contaminated food prep areas. Some restaurants have to shut down mid-service and send customers home.

The smell is the other immediate problem. Decomposing FOG produces hydrogen sulfide — a rotten egg odor that can clear a dining room. Even after the backup is resolved, the smell can linger for hours.

Fines and Regulatory Consequences

If FOG enters the municipal sewer system, the sewer district can issue fines and surcharges. Summit County Public Health can also cite you for the overflow itself — especially if it indicates a pattern of inadequate maintenance.

A grease trap overflow during a health inspection is an automatic violation. Depending on severity and history, consequences range from a warning with a correction deadline to a cease-operations order. Restaurants along Twinsburg's Darrow Road and Route 82 corridor are inspected regularly — you cannot predict when an inspector will walk in.

What to Do If Your Trap Overflows

  1. Stop using the affected drains immediately. Do not run water into a backed-up trap.
  2. Call for emergency grease trap service. We dispatch same-day to Twinsburg and surrounding areas.
  3. Contain the spill. Use absorbent material to prevent grease from spreading to the dining area.
  4. Do not attempt to clear the trap yourself by adding chemicals or boiling water — this pushes grease further into the sewer line.

Preventing Overflows

The fix is straightforward: get on a regular pumping schedule. Most overflows happen because the trap has not been serviced in too long. Once you are on a schedule based on your actual grease accumulation rate, overflows become virtually impossible.
