Why Does My Grease Trap Smell and How Do I Fix It?
A foul-smelling grease trap is overdue for pumping. When FOG and food solids decompose inside the trap, they produce hydrogen sulfide gas — the rotten egg smell. The fix is a thorough pump-out, scrape, and rinse. If the smell persists after cleaning, the trap may have a cracked baffle or damaged seal that needs repair.
What Causes the Smell
Grease, food particles, and organic solids trapped in the unit decompose over time. This decomposition produces hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other sulfur compounds — the distinctive rotten egg and sewage odor. The longer between pump-outs, the worse the smell gets. In hot weather — especially during Twinsburg summers — decomposition accelerates and the odor intensifies.
How to Fix It
- Schedule a full pump-out. This removes the decomposing material that is producing the odor.
- Request a scrape and rinse. Pumping alone may leave residue on the walls and baffles. A thorough scrape and rinse removes the odor source completely.
- Check the seal. If the lid gasket is damaged or the lid does not seat properly, odor escapes into the kitchen even when the trap is clean.
- Inspect the baffles. A cracked or missing baffle can create dead zones where grease accumulates and decomposes between pump-outs.
When the Smell Means a Bigger Problem
If the smell comes back quickly after a thorough cleaning, the trap may have structural issues — cracked walls, damaged baffles, or a compromised seal. Preventing Odor Problems
